GOING TO & WILL.

I. WHEN DO WE USE “GOING TO” ?

We use going to talk about arrangements, future plans or intentions. Some examples are:

  • My sister is very happy because she is going to start her new job next week.
  • My parents are going to meet me at the airport.
  • m going to see Paul next Saturday  morning.
  • I´m sure my brother is going to win the swimming competition.
  • I am going to travel to Paris next year.

II. WHEN DO WE USE “WILL”?

We use “will / won´t to talk about predictions. That is, to say things we think, guess or know about the future.  We usually use “I think”  or “I don´t think” + will + base form. Here are some examples:

  • Scientists predict that many more endangered species will die soon.
  • The weather will be cloudy and cold tomorrow.
  • “Minari” is a great movie. I think you´ll like it.
  • You´ve studied hard this term. I´m sure you´ll pass all your exams!
  • I don´t think it´ll rain  this evening.

We also use “will - won´t” to talk about decisions, offers and promises. For instance:

DECISIONS.

  • I won´t travel to Canada this year. I´ll save my money to buy a car.
  • Mike won´t stay for dinner. He´ll go home to study for an exam.
  • Mary hasn´t arrived yet. I´ll call her up right now.

OFFERS

  • ll help you with your  project.
  • I´ll pick you up at 7:00 tomorrow. Don´t worry.
  • ll make you a sandwich.

PROMISES

  • Don´t worry. I won´t tell anybody.
  • ll pay you back this weekend.
  • He  won´t hurt you ever again.

Will we have flying cars in the future?

(I)  As a scientist, I usually receive emails from readers interested in what the future will bring. Common questions are: Will we be able to fly in cars? How fast will transportation be in the future?  I really do not understand why people commonly relate flying with technology progress. There are many things to telling us the future is now. You just need to turn around to see the amounts of gadgets that we have and didn`t even imagine in our most eccentrical dreams.

(II)  Right now, there are robots doing house shores even though, the residents are miles away from their homes. You can surf the Internet searching for information in a huge world of data that any human being might possibly read in his entire life. Passionate travelers are waiting to book their tickets to go to the moon.

(III)  Yet, it seems to be that the idea of having flying cars goes back to the time when we were children and were asked about our predictions for the future. At school, most language teachers took us into that question because it was part of the book content. So, this conception might have been fixed in our minds so, we are still waiting for it to become true.

(IV)  But, why would you like to be driving such kinds of cars? First of all, I think they will be so expensive that any ordinary person would not afford them. On the other hand, what kind of fuel will they use? And, where will you park them? And, what will happen if they crash?

(V)  Definitively, my response to the subscribers is undoubtedly: Flying cars? I don`t believe this will ever happen.
