II. WHEN DO WE USE THE PRESENT PERFECT?

2.1 It has many uses. In this extract, we will focus on the uses of already” - yetand just”. We use  the signal  word “ALREADY between auxiliary HAVE/HAS and PAST PARTICIPLE,  to refer to completed actions that people expected. Present Perfect with “Already” is used in affirmative  sentences and questions. Here are some examples:

  • (+)  I´ve already handed in my homework.
  • (?)  Has Mike already registered  for the handball competition.
  • (+)  I´m afraid you´re too late for class. It ‘ s already finished.
  • No, you can´t meet Mr. Lee. (+)  He’ s already left for Europe.
  • (?)  Has Rose already gotten married?
  • (+)  I´ve already seen that movie

2.2 We use  the signal word YET at the end of negative sentences and questions to refer to  non-completed actions.

  • (-)  I haven´t  been to London yet.
  • (?) Has your brother  travelled to Canada yet?
  • (- ) No, he hasn´t been there yet.
  • (-)  We haven´t finished our project yet.
  • (-)  My mother hasn´t arrived home yet.
  • (-)  My car hasn´t been  painted  yet.
  • (?)  A: Have  your parents  gotten their passports yet?
  • (-)  B: No, not yet.

2.3 Lastly, we use  the signal word JUST between auxiliary HAVE/HAS and PAST PARTICIPLE  to refer to recently completed actions, in affirmative  sentences and questions.

  • (+)  Mike has just given us a handball lesson.
  • (+)  The class has just finished.
  • (+)  My boss has just left for Europe.
  • (?)  Has Rose just gotten married?

A Dream Job

Michael Palin has traveled all over the world several times, but he has lived in the same house in London since 1968. Some of you might remember him from the Monty Python movies he acted in between 1969 and 1983, but in 1989, Michael started doing TV travel programs for the BBC. He’s now more famous for his travel books and DVDs than for his acting.

His first series, Around the World in 80 Days, followed the same route as the Jules Verne novel of the same name. And, like Phileas Fogg, the hero of the book, Michael didn’t get on a plane. His programs have taken Michael from the North to the South Pole, around the Pacific Ocean, across the Sahara Desert, up into the Himalayas and through Eastern Europe.

He has had breakfast in Alaska, Sunday lunch at 5,000 meters on Mount Everest and slept in a tent in Antarctica. He’s met the Dalai Lama in India, done Tai Chi in Shanghai and driven one of the last steam trains in Poland.

It’s hard to believe that Michael Palin hasn’t been everywhere, but there are still places he would like to visit: Syria, Georgia, Brazil, Argentina—the list goes on. He doesn’t have any plans for another TV series at the moment, but I’m sure it won’t be long before he’s off on his travels again.
